First mate selection process
Because of school commitments, the first mate prize will be offered only to third or final year students. Other prizes will be on offer to students from previous years. For the position of first mate, a "yacht master" diploma is welcome, but not necessary. Experience, such as a prolonged stay at sea or knowing life on board of a yacht is more important. Competitive sailing experience is not mandatory; it is more about knowing how to function in limited space with limited comfort.
First phase:
Students will be asked to send out a motivation letter introducing themselves and explaining why they would like to be part of this expedition and what qualities and abilities they could offer.
Second phase: first interview
Selected students will be requested to come to an interview. There will be at least two Euronav's representatives interviewing one student. A member of the school should also be present.
Third phase: sharing results
Euronav will request the school recommendations, express its recommendations and prepare an information folder on each student selected which will be shared with Jan Wouters, skipper for the "In The Wake Of The Belgica Expedition".
Fourth and final phase:
Students short listed will be asked to complete a medical check up to make sure they are fit for this expedition. The medical visit will be organised by Euronav.
8 students will be chosen (two from each of the participating schools) and will be tested during a two days trip in the North Sea between July and August 2007.
