Secure in Ushuaia

The Euronav Belgica and her sailors are now safely back in the harbor of Ushuaia, Argentina. Each member of the successful expedition team has stories to tell and memories to share. It will come as no surprise that everyone will first take a deep breath and re-adapt to life on land.

The journey back to Tierra del Fuego from Antarctica was indeed a race against Mother Nature. The team made it into the sheltered waters of the Beagle Channel within hours of an impressive storm which pounded the Drake Passage. As Laurent’s photo shows, the storm in the relatively protected Beagle Channel raged with gusts up to 77 knots and a 10+ Beaufort which left the team only to imagine what fury must have been felt in the Drake.

The town of Ushuaia welcomed the team with a lovely Patagonian sunset and the promise of rest and recuperation. They will take a few days to organize the closure of this portion of the expedition, and will announce in the coming days their concrete plans for a return to Belgium.

But for now, appreciation reigns as each individual, in his or her own way, give thanks for a safe and successful expedition.
